Malibu Mansion Renovation Case: Kanye West Faces $140,000 Fine
Famous American rapper and fashion designer Kanye West, now known as 'Ye', is back in the headlines. This time, not for a new album, but for a legal complication related to the renovation of his abandoned Malibu mansion. The court has ordered him to pay a fine of $140,000.
Background of the case: Why the fine?
Kanye West bought a high-rise mansion in Malibu for about $57 million in 2021. He later planned to transform the house into a "living sculpture" designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando.
Tony Saxon, the project manager who worked on the renovation, filed a lawsuit against Kanye. Saxon alleged:
He was forced to work in an unsafe environment.
Labor laws were violated.
Back wages were not paid.
Court decision
After a lengthy hearing, the court ordered Kanye West to pay his former employee $140,000 in back pay and legal fees. The court reportedly issued a default judgment after Kanye or his legal team failed to appear in time for the hearing or provide sufficient evidence.
Current state of the mansion
This once luxurious property is now almost a ruin. Kanye cut off the windows, doors and even the electricity. He is currently trying to sell it, but its market value has dropped significantly due to the lack of renovations.
