Trump's call: Why this urgency?

About one-fifth of the world's total oil is transported through this narrow route. Iran's closure of this route has caused oil prices to soar on the world market. Trump claims that since countries like China, Japan and South Korea import the most oil through this route, they also have a responsibility to keep it safe. He made it clear, "The United States will not take all the responsibility alone as before."

How will any country react?

Various powerful countries have made their positions clear on Trump's request for help:

1. United Kingdom

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that they are trying to work out a 'workable plan' with allies. However, he made it clear that this will not be a NATO mission in any way and that Britain does not want to get directly involved in a major war.

2. Germany and the European Union

Germany has rejected the proposal outright. According to the German government, "This is not a NATO war."  EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kalas said it was important to keep the strait open, but NATO had no direct military role there.

3. China

Trump has directly sought help from China, which handles 90% of its oil. Beijing has, however, avoided military action and called on all sides to exercise restraint. China has been pushing for a negotiated solution and regional stability.

4. Japan and South Korea

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said they had no plans to send warships at the moment. South Korea said it was "reviewing" the issue but had not yet made any concrete commitments.

5. Australia

Australia has made it clear that it will not send any warships to the Strait of Hormuz

Current situation and threats to NATO

Trump warned that NATO's future could be "very bad" if allies do not step up to the plate.  He alleged that many countries, despite seeking US protection, are turning a blind eye in times of danger.

On the other hand, Iran has claimed that this path is only closed to its 'enemy' countries, not to others. Due to this contradictory position, the global economy is now facing great uncertainty.
