Why has America targeted Iran's Kharag Island?
This small island located in the Persian Gulf of Iran has currently become the hottest point in the Middle East. America has targeted this island for three main reasons:
1. The "lifeline" or lifeline of Iran's economy
Kharag Island is called the 'crown jewel' of Iran's economy. About 90% to 95% of Iran's total crude oil exports are completed through the terminal on this island.
Economic pressure: If America can destroy the oil infrastructure of this island, Iran's main source of foreign exchange will be cut off. This will cripple the Iranian government and its military economically.
2. Strategic military position
Kharag Island is very important not only for oil, but also militarily.
Missile and Mine Storage: According to recent US intelligence reports, Iran has built a large number of naval mines and missile bunkers on this island.
Control of the Strait of Hormuz: Since this island is close to the Strait of Hormuz, Iran can easily control or disrupt the global oil supply system from here. America has claimed that they mainly attacked these military installations.
3. Ensuring navigation in the Strait of Hormuz
Iran often threatens to close the Strait of Hormuz. This channel supplies 20% of the world's oil. By attacking Kharag Island, America is sending a message to Iran that if international navigation is disrupted, their main oil infrastructure will not be safe either.
